The International PhD School entitled: “Crop Systems, Forestry and Environmental Sciences”, was established at University of Basilicata (Italy) in the academic year 2000/2001 jointly with the University of Ioannina (Greece). At the present time, the School is based on a project jointly developed by an International Consortium, which includes the; - University of Basilicata (Potenza – Italy, Coordination Centre), - University of Ioannina (Greece), - University Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (France), - University Mohammed V - Agdal (Rabat – Morocco); and is sustained by the: - Technische Universität München, Weihenstephan, Freising, Germany; - GSF - National Research Centre for Environment and Health, Institute for Ecological Chemistry, Neuherberg, Germany.
In account of the tradition of co-operation and exchange between the jointed Universities, and the common scientific interests concerning the development of sustainable management systems and environmental protection, and in order to promote the mobility of Students and increase their opportunities to continue or to attend studies in one or more of involved Countries, the initiative aims to fill the educational gap in the field of “Precision Agriculture”, “Forestry Management and Physiology”, and “Environmental Safeguard”, by complementing different technical and scientific expertises and high level resources, available in the participant Universities. The duration of the PhD Course is 3 years. The period of study attended at the International PhD School is acknowledged on the basis of the acquired ‘Educational Credits’, as required by the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The amount of the annual credits, which can be obtained by attending the doctoral courses, is 60. Each set of 25 standard working hours performed by the Student gives rise to 1 credit. In order to obtain the final diploma, Students have to acquire 180 credits (60 per year) and prepare a thesis. The defence of the thesis will take place not before the end of the third year of the School. The thesis will be issued from a research work carried out under the supervision of a Professor, who will tutor the Student. PhD Students must carry out part of their research activities abroad for a period not less than 6 and not exceeding 18 months.
The Student exchange programme is sustained by: - Department of Environmental Sciences, Wageningen University; - Centre for Geo-Information, Wageningen University; - Department of Geography, University of Zaragoza; - Rothamsted Research Institute, Harpenden Herts, United Kingdom; - Department of Geography King’s College, London; - GDEH-Grupo de Disciplina de Ecologia da Hidrosfera, New University of Lisboa; - CIFO Center, Granada; - University of Alicante; - College of Forestry, Oregon State University, Corvallis (USA); - Hort Research Institute, Palmerston North, New Zeland; - CSIRO - Plant Industry, Canberra, Australia; - Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, Michigan State University (USA); - Department of Agricultural and Biological System Engineering, University of Arizona (USA); - Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre, Summerland, B.C., Canada.
